Understanding San Diego's Light Environment
San Diego averages more than 266 sunny days per year — more than Miami, more than Los Angeles, more than Phoenix on a clear-day basis. The UV index exceeds 6 (the threshold where unprotected skin damage occurs) on the majority of days between March and October. This baseline solar intensity has direct implications for window treatments: fabrics that would last ten years in Seattle or Chicago may show UV degradation in six years in San Diego, and light management that feels optional in cloudy climates is genuinely functional here.
The geography of the region creates distinct micro-climates that affect window treatment selection differently. Coastal properties in La Jolla, Del Mar, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach experience the marine layer — a regular morning overcast that burns off by mid-morning — followed by intense reflected light amplified by water proximity. UV exposure is actually higher near water because the ocean surface reflects radiation back upward. Inland communities like Poway, Escondido, El Cajon, and Santee experience less marine layer moderation, meaning direct sun exposure is longer and temperatures are higher — particularly in summer afternoons when inland valleys reach 95–105°F while the coast stays in the 70s.
The direction your windows face matters as much as the climate zone. Window treatment hardware that would last twenty years in an inland home may show significant rust and corrosion in five years at a beach-adjacent property. Marine-grade hardware means stainless steel or anodized aluminum mounting brackets and components, UV-stabilized plastic parts where metal is not used, and fabric constructions that are specifically rated for coastal UV intensity. Motorized systems at coastal properties should specify motors with sealed housing to prevent salt air ingress. The additional cost of marine-grade components over standard hardware is modest relative to the cost of premature replacement.
UV fabric degradation is accelerated at coastal locations by the reflective contribution of water. Room-by-Room Climate Strategy

A higher openness keeps the room bright and the view available while eliminating the direct-sun glare angle that makes screens unreadable. Cellular shades are a poor choice for home offices — they manage temperature but not glare, and the room-darkening effect reduces the daytime energy that makes home offices pleasant. Kitchen: light-filtering roller shade in a moisture-resistant fabric — easy to wipe down, reduces glare on countertops, and lets in enough light for comfortable food prep without making the space feel closed.
