A Note from the Studio

We think automation should feel like good staff in a great hotel: present exactly when needed, invisible otherwise. A motorized shade that lowers itself at three in the afternoon isn't a gadget — it is the house taking care of its own furniture, its own temperature, its own light. — The iL Progetto Studio, San Diego

Motorized Shades — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need existing wiring to get motorized shades?

No. Battery-powered motors require no wiring whatsoever and can be installed in any home, including rentals. Rechargeable battery motors run 6–18 months per charge via a USB-C cable. For a whole-home installation or if you prefer not to recharge, hardwired motors connect to your home's 110V power — we coordinate with your electrician or can recommend one.

Which smart home systems do your motorized shades work with?

Our motorized shades integrate with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit natively. For more advanced control — scene programming, sensor integration, time-of-day automation — we also support Lutron Caséta, Somfy, and Control4. Our in-house IT team handles all hub pairing, scene creation, and testing during installation.

Can I motorize existing shades I already have?

In most cases, no — motorization requires a motor to be built into the headrail at the time of fabrication. However, there are aftermarket solutions (like retrofit motors for some roller shades) that we can evaluate during a consultation. If your existing shades are due for replacement, new motorized shades are usually the cleanest and most reliable solution.

What happens if the power goes out or the app goes down?

All our motorized shades include a manual override. Battery motors can be operated by pulling a manual cord or using the wall remote. Hardwired motors retain their last programmed position and can be operated via physical switch even without internet connectivity. You are never locked out of your shades.
