What is the difference between blackout and light-filtering roller shades?

Blackout roller shades use a solid, opaque fabric that blocks 100% of incoming light — ideal for bedrooms and media rooms. Light-filtering roller shades use a semi-opaque or open-weave fabric that softens and diffuses sunlight without blocking the view. Sheer roller shades allow the most light through while still providing daytime privacy. We bring all three fabric types on your in-home consultation so you can see the difference in your actual light.

Can roller shades be motorized?

Yes. Every roller shade we carry is available with a quiet DC motor that can be controlled by wall switch, remote, app, or voice command (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit). Battery motors require no wiring and are ideal for retrofits; hardwired motors are preferred for new construction or full smart-home integration. Our IT team handles all programming.

What are side channels and do I need them?

Side channels are aluminum tracks that run the full height of the window and hold the fabric edges, creating a complete light seal. They eliminate the gap of light that typically shows on the left and right sides of a standard roller shade. They are essential for true blackout in bedrooms and home theaters, and optional elsewhere. Side channels also provide a significant upgrade in appearance, giving the shade a built-in, architectural look.

How are roller shades measured and installed?

We measure every window ourselves during your in-home consultation — you never need to measure anything. Roller shades can be inside-mounted (fitting within the window frame for a clean look) or outside-mounted (covering the full frame, which is better for light control). Custom fabrication takes 2–3 weeks, after which our installation team returns for a typically 30-minute-per-window installation.
