What is the difference between sheer shades and sheer drapes?
Sheer drapes are fabric panels hung from a rod that traverse open and closed. Sheer shades are a functional shade mechanism — they raise and lower like a roller shade but diffuse light through a translucent fabric. The key difference is light control: sheer shades can be raised completely out of the window for an unobstructed view, whereas sheer drapes always hang in the window opening to some degree.
What are Shangri-La shades?
Shangri-La shades (also called Silhouette shades) are the most sophisticated form of sheer shading. They suspend horizontal fabric vanes between two sheer panels. With the vanes open, soft filtered light diffuses throughout the room. With the vanes closed, the sheer panels layer to create privacy. When raised, the shade disappears into a compact headrail. The effect is architectural — like floating fabric — and much more tailored than standard sheer drapes.
Do sheer shades provide UV protection?
Yes — even in their open, light-filtering position, quality sheer shades block 80–90% of UV radiation. This is critical in San Diego where intense sun can fade furniture, flooring, and artwork quickly. Sheer shades deliver UV protection while maintaining natural light and view — a balance that heavy blackout treatments cannot achieve.
