Faux wood blinds in an Oceanside coastal home, unaffected by salt air humidity

Why do real wood blinds warp in Oceanside's coastal humidity?

Real wood is a natural material, and it moves when the air around it changes. A basswood slat takes on moisture during the marine layer mornings, swells a little, then gives that moisture back when the sun comes out. Repeat that a few hundred times and the slat stops returning to flat.

We see it most in homes close to the beach. Walk a few blocks inland from The Strand or the Oceanside Pier and you will still find plenty of houses where the blinds on the ocean side have a slight smile to every slat. The finish suffers too. Lacquer on real wood can crack along the edges once the wood underneath has expanded and shrunk enough times, and salt in the air settles into those cracks. Windows over a kitchen sink or near a shower get it worst, since they add their own steam on top of the coastal air. None of this happens overnight. It usually shows up in the second or third year, which is long after the return window on a store-bought blind has closed.

How well do faux wood blinds hold up near the coast?

Very well, because the slats are a composite or PVC material that simply does not take on water. They stay straight through foggy mornings, wet winters, and steamy bathrooms, and the finish has nothing underneath it pushing outward.

Cleaning is the other half of the story. Homeowners who keep a boat at Oceanside Harbor know how fast a fine salt film builds up on anything near the water, and window blinds collect it too. With real wood, you are limited to dusting, because a wet cloth can stain or lift the finish. With faux wood you can wipe each slat with a damp cloth and a little mild soap, and in a bathroom you can do it as often as you like. That is a big deal for a family with kids, pets, or a kitchen window above the stove.

One trade off worth knowing: faux wood is heavier than real wood. On a very wide window, we often split the opening into two or three blinds on a shared headrail so each one stays easy to raise. That is a choice you want made by someone measuring your actual window, not guessed at in a store aisle. You can see the colors and slat sizes on our faux wood blinds page.

Can faux wood blinds still look like real wood in kitchens and baths?

Yes. Good faux wood comes in painted whites and in embossed wood grain finishes that read as stained wood from across the room, so you can match cabinetry or trim without putting real wood next to a sink.

This matters in older Oceanside homes, such as the beach cottages and craftsman bungalows in South O, where the trim and built ins often carry the character of the house. Homeowners want the windows to feel warm and period appropriate, and they do not want to replace the blinds every few years. A two inch or two and a half inch faux wood slat in a soft white or a warm grain finish usually does the job. For the rooms where you want something more permanent, our plantation shutters are another moisture friendly option with the same clean, architectural look, and they work especially well on front windows facing the street. When we bring samples to your home, we hold them right against your cabinets and window trim so you can see the match in your own light before you decide.

Why choose custom blinds over big box blinds for an Oceanside home?

Because a blind that does not fit the window leaves light gaps, privacy gaps, and slats that never sit quite right. Stock sizes come in fixed widths, so most get cut down or mounted with gaps on both sides.

Custom blinds are built to your measurements. For an inside mount, we measure each window in three places for width and height, then size the blind so it fills the opening with a small, even clearance rather than a visible strip of daylight along each edge. For an outside mount, we extend past the frame so the blind overlaps the opening and blocks the side glow you get at night when a streetlight sits right outside.

Fit and material work together, and we saw that with one Oceanside homeowner. The coastal humidity had ruined the real wood blinds in her bedroom. The slats bowed so badly that people walking past could see straight into the room. She decided to replace every real wood blind in the house with faux wood so it would never happen again.
