A family room that opens to the backyard through a full wall of glass doors, and a soaking tub under three tall windows. Each door panel and each bath window got its own shade.

Can you put cellular shades on French doors?

Yes. Mount a slim cellular shade on each door panel, right on the glass side of the frame, and the shade moves with the door. That is how we handled this Rancho Santa Fe family room.

The back wall here is almost all glass. Seven tall panels in white frames run nearly corner to corner, and the panel with the lever handle opens to the patio. Every one of them gets direct sun across a slate floor and the back of a long sectional. Drapery would have needed a lot of wall to stack on, and this room only has a few inches of it at each end.

So each panel has its own shade, sized to the glass inside its frame. The headrail sits tight to the top rail of the door, and the fabric stays clear of the handle. Open a door and the shade swings with it. Nothing flaps, and nothing gets caught. We get asked about cellular shades for doors more than almost anything else, and the answer is almost always a door mount like this one.

Why pick cellular shades for a sunny wall of glass?

Because the honeycomb pockets trap air. That pocket of air slows heat moving through the glass, which helps a lot when an entire wall faces the yard.

Cellular shades are two layers of pleated fabric bonded into a row of cells. Seen from the side they look like a stack of tiny hexagons. The light filtering fabric on these doors glows white when the sun hits it, and it still blocks the glare that would otherwise bounce off the slate tile and up into the TV. We wrote more about how the cells work in our post on honeycomb shades and energy savings.

There is a practical side too. Each pleat folds up tight, so a raised shade takes up very little of the glass. In the close photo the shade sits partway down. The upper panes are softened and the lower part stays open to the turf and the play area outside, which is handy if you want to keep an eye on the yard from the couch. On a door that gets used all day, we always steer toward a cordless lift, so there are no loops hanging at kid height.

What shades work best on bathroom windows over a tub?

Shades that mount inside the frame and use a fabric that will not mind a little steam. Over a tub, you want privacy. You also want a soft glow when they are down, not a dark room.

This bath has three tall, narrow windows set into a curved wall above a freestanding tub, with a band of decorative tile at the base. We treated them as three separate shades, each measured on its own, rather than forcing one size on all of them. Each one fits inside its own opening. The headrail tucks up under the top of the frame and the side gaps stay small and even.

A light filtering fabric was the right call. Closed, it turns the afternoon sun into a warm haze across the wall and you can still make out the shape of the window grid behind it. Nobody outside can see in. A heavy room darkening fabric would make the space feel like a closet, and a sheer would not give enough privacy at night with the lights on. Two potted plants sit right under the sills, which is one more reason to keep cords out of the picture.

How do you match window treatments across a Rancho Santa Fe home?

Pick one fabric color and carry it through, even when the rooms are different. Here both the family room doors and the bath windows read as the same soft white from across the house.

That consistency matters more than people think. Many homes in Rancho Santa Fe have long sightlines, so you can see from one room into the next and out through the glass beyond it. Mismatched shades on two walls are easy to spot. Keeping the same tone also makes the white door frames look cleaner, because nothing fights them.

Fit is the other half, and it starts with the measure. Door panels flex a bit when they swing, and the depth between glass and frame changes from door to door, so we check every panel instead of copying one number across the set. Bath windows in curved walls are rarely perfectly square either. We plan our window treatments in Rancho Santa Fe around those small differences so the finished shades look like they came with the house.
