A living room that opens onto a patio and a green fairway. White shutters went on the windows around the slider, so the door stays clear and the view stays open.

Why choose plantation shutters for a living room with a golf course view in Carlsbad?

Because you can tilt the louvers instead of closing the view. Plantation shutters let this Carlsbad living room block direct sun and glare from the patio while the fairway stays in sight between the slats.

The room sits at ground level. A sliding glass door opens onto a covered patio with string lights, a low wall, palms and agaves, and beyond that a strip of green grass and the neighbors' patio umbrellas. That view is the reason to live here. Covering it with a solid fabric for half the day would waste it.

Shutters handle that well. Open the louvers flat and you look straight out. Angle them down and you block the high sun while still seeing the grass. Close them and the room goes private, which helps when anyone is out on the course. Our plantation shutters are built to the opening, so each panel fits its own window instead of a stock size.

A home on a fairway needs both at once: the view by day and privacy when people are out on the course. That balance comes up often when we plan window treatments in Carlsbad.

Should you put shutters on a sliding glass door?

Sometimes, but not always. Here we shuttered the windows beside and around the slider and left the door glass itself clear, so it slides open without anything in the way.

A slider gets used every day in a house like this, out to the patio and back. Shutters on a slider need a sliding track or a bifold panel, and either one adds bulk you have to move every time you step outside. Keeping the door bare means one less thing to open. The windows around it carry the light control.

You can see the result in the photos. Tall shutter panels fill the window wall next to the door, while the transom windows up high stay open to the sky. Those transoms let daylight in over the top of the closed louvers. The room never feels shut in.

Not every home wants this. If your slider takes the hottest afternoon sun, covering the door itself may matter more, and we would plan for it. For a side by side look at the options, read our post on plantation shutters vs roller shades.

How do shutters work on corner windows?

They work well, with one catch. The panels have to swing open without hitting each other, so we plan the hinge side on each window before we build anything.

In this living room, two windows meet at an inside corner. Each one has its own white shutter with wide louvers and a solid frame mounted around the opening. When the louvers are open, light comes through both walls and crosses in the corner. Closed, they make a clean white wall.

The catch is clearance. Shutter panels open like small doors. If both corner panels hinge toward the corner, they collide halfway open, and you can never fold them back all the way. The fix is to hinge them away from each other, so each panel swings toward its own wall and both clear easily when you clean the glass.

Wide louvers also make a difference at the corner. Fewer slats mean more open space between them, so the view through two windows at once looks less cluttered than it would with narrow blinds. It is a small detail you notice every time you sit down.

What should you know before ordering plantation shutters?

Measure for the room you have, not the one in the catalog. Window depth, trim, handles and how often each window gets opened all change how the shutter should be framed and hinged.

In this home the frames sit on textured walls painted a soft gray, and the bright white shutters stand out crisply against them. White shutters also match the window trim and the patio door frame, so the window wall looks finished in one color. We check every opening for square too. Older stucco homes often have openings that are a little out, and a shutter frame has to make up the difference so the panels close evenly.

Shutters are a long term choice. They stay on the house, they clean with a cloth, and they hold up to strong coastal sun without a fabric to fade.
