What is the best window covering for a kitchen sink window in Poway?

A roller shade with a privacy fabric is hard to beat. It is flat, easy to wipe, has nothing to tangle near the faucet, and blocks the view in both directions when it is down. That is what we put on this Poway kitchen sink window.

The kitchen is a corner layout with a stainless sink set at an angle, speckled granite counters, a tile floor and raised panel cabinets in a deep cherry finish. The window behind the sink is wide and sits unusually low. Its sill is barely above the backsplash, so the glass starts almost at counter height.

That low sill changes the plan. Anything that hangs into the sink area gets splashed, and you reach over it every time you rinse a pan. A shade that stacks up high and drops straight down stays out of the work zone.

Outside the glass you can see a stacked woodpile and a side yard. It is not a view anyone frames. What it does is open the kitchen to the yard. At night, with the lights on, a bare window like this puts the whole room on display to anyone outside. Covering it well is the first thing we think about for window treatments in Poway kitchens like this one.

What is the difference between a privacy roller shade and a solar shade?

A privacy fabric is solid enough that nobody sees through it, day or night. A solar shade is a woven screen you can see out of, and after dark, with the lights on, people outside can see in.

That nighttime flip catches a lot of homeowners off guard. Solar screens work by being brighter on one side. In daylight the bright side is outside, so the screen hides the room. Turn on the kitchen lights at dinner and the bright side moves indoors. Suddenly the screen is a window again.

For a kitchen that gets used most in the evening, that is the wrong trade. The white privacy fabric on this shade still glows during the day, so the room never goes gloomy, but it stays opaque when the sun goes down.

White was the right color here too. Against cherry cabinets and dark granite, a beige or gray fabric would have made the corner feel heavy. White bounces light back onto the counter, which helps when you are prepping food by the sink. Our roller shades come in privacy, light filtering, solar and blackout fabrics, so we match the fabric to the room and the hours you spend in it.

Should a kitchen roller shade be an inside or outside mount?

On this window, outside. The shade mounts on the wall above the opening, with a white cassette over the roll, and the fabric runs a little wider than the glass.

There were two reasons. First, the window frame is shallow and the sill is so low that an inside mount would have put the bottom of the fabric right down on the backsplash. Mounting above gives us room. Second, the corner layout leaves cabinets close on one side, and a wall mount let us center the shade on the window and still clear the upper cabinet.

The cassette is worth having in a kitchen. Cooking puts grease and steam in the air, and an open fabric roll collects it. A closed cassette keeps the roll covered, and the face of it wipes clean with a damp cloth.

In the photo the shade sits about two thirds of the way down. That is a typical everyday spot. The bottom strip of glass still shows the yard and lets light reach the sink. The upper part, where eyes from outside usually land, is covered. You can stop a roller shade anywhere along its drop, and it holds there.

How do you keep a kitchen shade looking good near the sink?

Pick a fabric you can wipe, keep the bottom bar out of the splash zone, and let the cassette protect the roll. Do those three things and a kitchen shade holds up for years.

Kitchen fabrics take more abuse than bedroom ones. There is steam from the sink and the dishwasher right below. There is the stray splash. There is the cooking haze that settles on every flat surface in the room. A smooth, tightly woven privacy fabric shrugs off a quick wipe. A loose, heavy weave would hold onto all of it.

The hem bar matters more than people think. On low windows we set the fully lowered position so the bar rests just above the sill, not on the counter, which keeps it dry. We also make sure the bottom bar clears the faucet when the shade comes all the way down.
