Are vertical blinds a good choice for a wide living room window in Chula Vista?
Yes, when the window slides sideways or runs much wider than it is tall. Vertical blinds draw to one side, and the vanes hang the same way the window opens, so you can reach the glass without raising anything.
This living room has one long window wall, split into several panes by dark frames, with a sliding section for air. A single roller shade or horizontal blind across that width would be heavy, and you would have to raise the whole thing to open one pane.
Vertical blinds skip that problem. Pull the vanes back only as far as you need.
These vanes are a light, semi sheer white fabric, not the stiff vinyl strips many people picture when they hear the words vertical blinds. With the sun behind them they glow and show the outline of the buildings outside, but they still break up the view in. Our vertical blinds come in fabric, vinyl and sheer versions, and for window treatments in Chula Vista living rooms like this one we usually steer people toward fabric.
How much privacy do fabric vertical blinds give when neighbors are close?
Plenty in daylight, once you rotate the vanes. Turned edge on, they let in light and a view. Turned flat, they overlap and close off the window.
This window faces a mid rise building across the street, with rows of windows looking straight back. That is the real issue in this room. Bare glass would put the sofa and the TV on display to everyone over there.
In the photo the vanes are turned nearly flat. You can still make out the shape of the building through the fabric, but not the detail, and someone looking in from across the street sees even less, because during the day the room is darker than the outdoors.
At night the balance flips. With lamps on inside, a semi sheer fabric shows more, so evenings call for the vanes fully closed, and a room that needs real night privacy can add a heavier fabric or a drape. Here the white vanes, the cream valance and the light walls keep the room bright and simple.
Why put a valance over vertical blinds?
A valance hides the headrail, the carriers and the top edge of every vane. Without one, the top of a vertical blind is a row of hooks along a bare track.
Here the valance runs the full width of the window as one long, fabric covered band in soft cream, mounted just under the ceiling. It also covers the gap above the frame, where light would otherwise spill over the top of the vanes. On a window this wide, a long bare track looks like hardware. With the valance in place, it reads as part of the wall.
Mounting it high makes the window look taller, too.
The blinds start near the ceiling instead of at the top of the frame, so your eye reads the whole wall as glass, and in a room with a standard ceiling height that small move does more than you would expect. When people compare custom work with blinds from a big box store, details like this are usually the difference. Our post on custom vs off the shelf blinds covers the rest.
How do you keep vertical blinds from looking dated in a modern living room?
Pick fabric vanes over vinyl, keep the color quiet, and hide the hardware. Those choices do most of the work.
This room leans modern. It has round ceiling lights, a slatted wood accent wall beside the TV, and a framed painting on the opposite wall. Shiny vinyl vanes in stark white would fight all of that. The soft white fabric keeps the window calm, so the wood wall and the art are what you notice when you walk in.
Ask about wand control.
A single wand that both turns and draws the vanes keeps loose cords off the floor, which is safer around kids and pets and looks tidier too. Vertical blinds are also one of the more budget friendly ways to cover a window this wide, which makes them a smart choice when the budget has to stretch across several rooms.
